July 11 - Shannon Beach Closed

By Joyce Westner

July 11, 2023.  Updated on July 12.  Once again, the state is warning people not to swim in the Upper Mystic Lake’s Shannon Beach, due to a “bacterial exceedance.”  The popular beach, with a newly rebuilt bath house, is Winchester’s only public swimming place but recent heavy rains have increased the runoff from storm water runoff.  The Mystic Valley Watershed Association has been working for several years to improve the water quality and lower the amount of Enterococcus or E. coli, both of which can sicken people and pets alike.  For more information, see the state’s report at https://www.mass.gov/info-details/current-public-beach-postings  (Photo courtesy of the Mystic Valley Watershed Association.)
