Help Clear the Way for a New Forest

Special to the News from Prassede Calibi

"Grow Local for the Planet, in collaboration with Wright-Locke Farm, is starting Winchester's own "Miyawaki" or Fast Forest! This involves transforming a bit of low habitat-value wetlands into a high-value mature forest in 30 years rather than the typical 150 years.

Volunteers will help remove the root systems of goldenrod and other non-woody species to make way for the native trees we will plant there in the Spring. This work day is scheduled for Saturday, October 7th from 9am-12pm. This event is for ages 11 and up (17 and under must be accompanied by an adult).

If you would like to join, please first fill out this online form (this must be complete prior to volunteering). Then sign up to volunteer on the 7th by following this link.

Remember to wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, work boots, and bring a water bottle...and a pair of gloves if you have them. If you cannot commit to the full time, that is fine. We would love to receive any help you can offer.

You will be meeting the coordinator, Prassede, in front of the Squash Barn (above the goat pen) at at Wright-Locke Farm. Parking is available across the street at Mullen Field.

There will be other dates to help out if you can't make this one.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you!"
