Winchester Concert Series Presents “New Works by John Kramer”

Special to the News

Oct 24 - The Winchester Unitarian Society kicks off its 2023–2024 concert series on Friday at 8:00 p.m., with “New Works by John Kramer.” Kramer is Music Director at Winchester Unitarian Society and has written numerous works for orchestra and choir.

The concert features three multi-movement pieces by John Kramer, including “Violin Sonata,” performed by Julia Cash; “Cello Sonata,” performed by Sam Ou; and “Piano Trio,” performed by Cash, Ou, and Kramer. Other original Kramer compositions are also on the program.

The two sonatas and the piano trio follow forms traditionally associated with classical music. But within those forms, Kramer taps into a range of musical elements and expressions, from classical to jazz, to explore the broad array of human experience and emotion.

“There is something wonderful about using old forms in new ways,” says Kramer. For example, the opening of the three-movement cello piece is “full of jazz-infused rhythms and gestures.” Similarly, the allegro movement of the piano trio uses “inventive rhythms in 7/4 and other unusual time signatures.” In all, says Kramer, “Concert goers can look forward to a delightful evening of music, full of warm harmonies and textures, soothing melodies, exciting climaxes, dramatic actions, and a rich musical experience.”

Violinist Julia Cash performs with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Boston Ballet, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra of Boston. She is on the faculties of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, Boston Latin School, and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras.

Cellist Sam Ou has performed with the Borromeo String Quartet and at numerous summer venues, including Tanglewood and the Sarasota, Musicorda, Santa Fe, and La Jolla music festivals. He is on the faculties at New England Conservatory Preparatory School and the Powers Music School.

Pianist, composer, and arranger John Kramer has performed widely throughout the U.S. and has received numerous commissions. In addition to his role as Music Director at Winchester Unitarian Society, John is on the faculty at Berklee College of Music, where he is an assistant professor in the Harmony Department.
