Taylor Herman

September 8, 2023. Winchester has hired a new Town Planner, Taylor Herman. To learn more about our new Town Planner we asked him some questions.
What do you do? What are the job requirements for the position?
The Town Planner is responsible for conducting research, preparing studies and work plans, and providing recommendations concerning the Town’s long-term physical and economic development. This includes comprehensive land use planning, zoning analysis, subdivision, as well as special permit, site plan review, and design review for projects presented to the Planning Board. Additionally, the Town Planner plays a crucial role in cultivating relationships between the Planning Department, other town boards, and the Winchester community.
What is your background?
I grew up in Sudbury, MA and currently live in Medford with my wife. I am a traditionally trained architect with a master’s in architecture from Northeastern University.
Where did you work before coming to Winchester?
Before coming to Winchester I worked at the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) and most recently as a planning and development consultant to developers and municipalities under my own business.
What area(s) do you specialize in or have greater interest in?
I have built a strong passion and skillset for community engagement. I love working with the members of the community to help build, design, and preserve what people love about their neighborhoods and towns.
How did you come to be doing what you are doing?
My education and interest in architecture brought me to pursue the field of planning.
What are some of the bigger challenges you see in Winchester?
The biggest immediate challenge for the Town Planner, and the Winchester community, is our compliance to the MBTA 3A Multi-Family Zoning Requirements.
What are some of the unique things you’ve noticed about our community?
Winchester, from a planning perspective, is a unique town-like its wonderful and historic downtown area with great transportation options. The people of Winchester are also caring people who want to see a bright future for the town that they live in.
What are some of your favorite things about Winchester so far?
Winchester Town Hall has an amazing staff. They are friendly, dedicated, and hard working. I also enjoy the local downtown shops.
What hobbies do you pursue outside of work?
Outside of work I frequents the Fells with my dog, Maia, I am an avid Lego enthusiast, and traveler.
What do you want people to know about you and this position?
I believe that the Town Planner does more than just write policy and approve projects. I hope that people feel comfortable reaching out to me with questions or suggestions whether they are planning related or not.
