The following was submitted by Prassede Calabi on behalf of the Fast Forest committee:

The WIN Fast Forest planting event set for May 4 has been re-scheduled to Sept. 21, with a rain date of Sept. 22.

While this is not the committee’s first choice, weather is out of anyone’s control (as every gardener knows).

Why postpone? The combination of ongoing soggy conditions and many Winchester weekend events.

The site is too wet for site preparation, and deliveries are impossible — including delivery of the plants! The Farm Pond is still way over its banks and across the road. The ground will also not likely dry enough in two weeks to do what needs to be done.

The work includes the following:

• Get delivery of many more cubic yards of compost.

•Mix that compost into the soil.

• Get delivery of the fence.

• Put in the fence (banging in some 24 fence posts, hanging the mesh and staking it down at the bottom).

• Get delivery of the plants and plant the plants.

• Get delivery of mulch and spread it.

There is also no other free weekend between now and mid-June. Mother’s Day, ENKA, Memorial Day, Town Day and WHS graduation. Then it’s summer, which is hotter for the plants, and people are away.

So the committee just called it for September.

There will be some onsite work during the summer.
